About CCLCS

Founded in 1994, the Cape Cod Lighthouse Charter School (CCLCS) is a public middle school serving Cape Cod students in grades 6, 7, and 8. Two hundred and sixteen students from nearly every town on the Cape attend. Classes are small and the student-teacher ratio is approximately 10:1.

ADMISSION PROCESS
There are no eligibility requirements for enrollment in the Lighthouse Charter School. As required by the Education Reform Act of 1993, the school employs a lottery to admit students. Students must complete a short application in order to be included in the lottery. State law requires that siblings of currently enrolled Lighthouse students be admitted automatically.

AFTER SCHOOL CLUBS
The Lighthouse Charter School offers its students many extra-curricular activities. Such activities have included Roots and Shoots (an environmental club), Writer's Club, Chess Club, Runner's Club, Mountain Bike Club, Ski Club, Quilting Club, Student Government, dances, and talent shows.

COMMUNITY-BASED PARTNERSHIPS
In strict compliance with its charter, The Lighthouse Charter School maintains active, ongoing relationships with numerous community organizations. In addition, Lighthouse students participate in a number of community service projects.

CURRICULUM
The Lighthouse Charter School follows the MA Curriculum Frameworks for math, science, social studies, and literature. Teachers meet regularly to identify the content to be covered by each grade and to develop interdisciplinary units through which to teach the material. Health and language curricula have also been developed.
In the classroom, teachers challenge students to become problem solvers and encourage them to satisfy their intellectual curiosity. Long-term projects, class presentations and productions, and writing assignments further motivate students to perform to their highest individual potential.

GOVERNANCE AND ACCOUNTABILITY
The Lighthouse Charter School is run by an elected board of trustees. A director oversees the day-to day operation and administration. The school reports directly to the Massachusetts Department of Education (D.O.E.) and must adhere strictly to the terms of its charter. All Lighthouse students are required to take state-mandated standardized tests (CAT and MCAS) and their progress is closely monitored by the D.O.E.

LANGUAGES
All seventh and eighth graders study either French or Spanish.

MUSIC/ART
All students participate in art. The school also offers chorus and band for those students interested in performing.

PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT
One of the cornerstones of the Lighthouse Charter School is parent involvement. The school depends heavily on parent volunteers who assist with driving, coaching, fundraising, chaperoning, grant writing and many other activities. All parents are expected to volunteer approximately three hours a month for school-related activities.

RECREATION AND SPORTS
The Lighthouse Charter School provides an extremely diverse recreational program for its students including such activities as mountain biking, bowling, rowing, soccer, basketball, volleyball, and ropes course. Seventh and eighth grade students may also participate in interscholastic competition in soccer, basketball, baseball and softball.

SCHOOL CALENDAR
The Lighthouse Charter School follows the same calendar as the Nauset Regional School District. School hours are roughly 8:55 a.m.-3:15 p.m.

SEMINARS
Several times throughout the year, students select a seminar. Typically seminars cover a wide range of topics and allow students the opportunity to explore an area in more depth. Seminars have been offered in Radio Production, Shakespeare, Mock Trial, Geology of Cape Cod, Japanese Language and Culture, Drama, Manufacturing, Sports Training and Physiology, and Mural Painting, to name just a few.

SPECIAL EDUCATION
The Lighthouse Charter School employs a special education administrator and a special education teacher. The school complies fully with the mandates of the Chapter 766 Special Education Law. Individual Education Plans (IEPs) are monitored closely and reevaluated as necessary. In addition, all staff have received professional development focusing on full inclusion.

STAFF
The staff of the Lighthouse Charter School is comprised of a dynamic and gifted group of teachers whose experience ranges from 25 years to first year. The majority of the staff are certified MA teachers and those teaching music, art, and writing are artists in residence. The school offers a mentoring program in which more experienced staff members work with novice teachers. By encouraging a continual exchange of ideas among staff in such areas as teaching methods and styles and curriculum content, the mentoring process strengthens the skills of all the teachers.

TECHNOLOGY
The Lighthouse Charter School has nearly 100 Macintosh computers connected - via ethernet or wirelessly - to a school-wide network and the Internet. We maintain an up-to-date website that details ongoing school activities. Computers are considered an integral "undercurrent" to the curriculum. Each classroom has computer access for needed activities. All students must sign a "Technology Code of Ethics" that acknowledges their understanding of the proper ethics of computer use and electronic research.

TRANSPORTATION
Students living in the Nauset region are provided school bus transportation, but occasionally our schedule differs from the Nauset Public Schools, and parents must arrange morning and/or afternoon transportation. If you have trouble arranging transportation, call the office and we will try to help. Students who wish to travel on a bus other than their own may do so only if is for child care reasons.
Students from outside the Nauset District must provide their own transportation to and from school (i.e. parents, car pools, B-bus). B-bus and Flex-bus are operated by the Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority. Nauset School District policy does not allow students from out-of-district to ride their buses ever. Since Nauset provides our transportation, we therefore we cannot issue bus passes for out-of-district students.
Students from Dennis to Bourne Beginning in the 08-09 school year, there is a new bus service for you!
