Database - Courses
"It's easier to wash a cat than it is to think about it."
General
Defining: Each course is required to have a Subject, Teacher, and School Year. Most courses will also have a suffix (e.g. French 2), and for each term, a subhead ('Algebra'), a blurb, and possibly team teachers.
Managing: Courses are managed by clicking 'Courses' from the Lighthouse Data Menu (available on most staff computers from the Apple Menu or Dock), or from the Main Menu of Progress Reports.
- Since most courses have been carried forward from the previous year, or created for you, they should only need editing.
- Courses not taught by the teacher in the previous year must be created ('tho this is usually done for you).
- Courses taught in the previous year may be redefined for the current year (if needed).
Editing a Course
- If in List view, click the green 'Edit' button for the desired course.
- If you are at the 'Edit Description' screen, but the desired term is not yellow, click the green 'Edit' button for the appropriate term.
- Enter info for Team (team teaching only); Subhead (nice, but optional); the 'blurb' / description (large field); and, for some seminars, Maximum student #.
- Check your spelling!
- Continue by clicking another of your courses (in blue-green area) or a button at the top (Main Menu will lead you to Progress Reports).
Creating a Course
- From Courses' Main Menu, click 'New Course...'
- Enter the Subject and (if you teach more than one course in that Subject) a Suffix.
- Confirm the Teacher ID & School Year (should be fine).
- Click 'Accept'.
- Edit the appropriate Terms (see editing, above).
Redefining a Course
- Find the course (from the prior year). If you see a list of courses, click the Edit button for the desired course.
- Click the blue 'Redefine Course for THIS year' button, and 'Accept'.
- Edit the appropriate Terms (see editing, above).
IMPORTANT - when done with the session, click on a green DATA MENU button, then click (near the top) on QUIT FILEMAKER or (to allow quicker access to the databases) CLOSE THESE DBs.
