Understanding East Asia Through Traditional Folk Art
This seminar explored the differences among the cultures of East Asia - Korea, Japan, China and Mongolia. Traditional folk arts of this region are connected through history, but also reflect the unique features of the countries. We began in Korea with Pojagi wrapping clothes, an art that combines skills of quilting and embroidery. Students had the opportunity to explore calligraphy, poetry and painting, paper cuts, Tsam masks, and traditional kites among other arts. Visual introductions of the countries were presented through video clips, slides and readings.
