Notes to Home for the Week of November 7, 2011
General:
Admissions Open House - for interested 5th graders is this Wednesday at 6 p.m. Please help get the word out.
All - Student Government will be sponsoring its first dance of the year. It will be on Friday, December 2, at Orleans Elementary School from 6:45-8:30 PM. If you would like to donate bottles of water to be sold at the dance, you may drop them off at school the week of the dance or you may bring them with your student to the dance. Chaperones are needed. Please call Mr. Scichilone or Mrs. Marvullo if you can chaperone.
All - Student Government-sponsored Food Drive for needy families continues until November 16. Please be as generous as you can to assist needy families during the Thanksgiving season.
Auction News - Wow! What a team! Thank you one and all for a wonderful Auction yesterday. Thanks to all the families and staff who collected items or donated items themselves. We had close to 500 items which Beth Novotny, Kim Borowski, Carol Cobb and Co. turned into that wonderful 20 page catalog you saw. If you weren't able to join us on Sunday, there was a hearty paddle wielding crowd who bid and had a wonderful afternoon. Thanks to our many volunteers who helped this weekend - from the transporters who moved the items from our storage unit to the Sheraton and handed off to our display artists and the runners and cashiers who collected money and connected winners with their treasures.
As we begin the holiday shopping season, the Auction Committee offers a gentle reminder to think locally - the auction was the success it was due to the generosity of our local businesses listed down the right hand side of the catalog. Stop by and thank them for their support, especially appreciated in these uncertain economic times.
November CCLCS Newsletter - is available at Families/Newsletters

This sectional is for Vicky, Michelle, Chris, Kat and Clare R. Tutorial on Thursday will always be extra help for violinists who can come in the French room.
Seminars:
Girls Seminar and Drawing with Scissors Seminar - We're off to the rink tomorrow during seminar! Please bring $4 and skates (if you have them - rentals will be available if you don't). If there are any issues, please let Ms Kast know.
Grade 7:
Social Studies - Students have been given a study guide for the test which is next Tuesday 11/15. It is also available on Jupiter Grades as a PDF in case students misplace it. The study guide is due on Monday 11/14. No partial credit is given for late study guides since we go over it in its entirety in class. Please note that students will be writing an essay in class this week so they should bring their Mesopotamia folders with them to class each day.
Grade 8:
High School Showcase Invitation - 8th grade families, mark your calendars! We'll be holding a High School Showcase at CCLCS the evening of Tuesday, November 29, at 7:00 p.m. We are inviting representatives from area high schools to talk with your student and you, and to answer any questions you have about what they offer. We will need a few parents to help set up, and to bring dessert and coffee for the event. If you would like to help, contact Christine Johnson-Staub at: Christine (at) johnson-staub.net or 508-428-3612. Stay tuned for more details! We've got a long list of invitees, but if you're interested in a particular school, let Christine know so we can make sure they're invited. Hope to see you all there!
Language Arts - Essays on the short story "The White Umbrella" are due today. I am hoping to get them graded and back to the kids before the long weekend because.... The benchmark essay is next week! Woo hoo! We begin on Monday November 14 and students will be working on it in both LA and in Social Studies on Monday. They have until the end of class on Wednesday to finish the essay, which means they: read a short story (on their own), brainstorm, write a draft, edit, and produce a final copy. They must get a 4.0 or better (out of 5.0) to "pass" the benchmark, or they revise it in the week before Thanksgiving. This is all done in class. Also this week, students receive their two Shakespeare projects: a caricature and an oral performance. Look for those this week- they will be drawing and acting. This will be their only homework for the next week or so.
Social Studies - Nice debates today
Please write a quick reflection (paragraph in length) tonight for homework. Please also have an article and your project check-in sheet for Wednesday. Parents, look for a yellow half sheet of paper, it needs your signature on it as well!
